Russell Grant Foster is a prominent British professor known for his work in circadian neuroscience and sleep research, particularly focusing on how light and the eye affect the body's internal clock. He is the Director of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and the Head of the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute at the University of Oxford. He is also a Nicholas Kurti Senior Fellow at Brasenose College at the University of Oxford. 

His research has been mostly on the health disorders due to disrupted sleep cycles, which a few generations back wasn't an issue at all.

Circadian rhythm research:

Foster's research delves into how light is detected by the eyes and processed to regulate the body's internal clock (circadian rhythms). 

Non-rod, non-cone photoreceptors:

He is known for discovering a new class of photoreceptor in the eye, called photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs), which are involved in regulating circadian rhythms, sleep, and other functions. 

Sleep and mental health:

He investigates the importance of sleep on brain and mental health, aiming to understand and potentially reduce anxiety surrounding sleep. 

Public engagement:

Foster is actively involved in public engagement with science, contributing to radio, television, and writing for the press. He chairs the Royal Society Public Engagement Committee and is a trustee of the Science Museum Group. 

Author of popular science books:

He has co-written several popular science books, including "Rhythms of Life" and "Life Time," which explore the science of circadian rhythms and their impact on health.
